Chapter One

“Miranda!” yelled Mom from downstairs. I rolled over trying to go back to sleep so that I wouldn’t have to face the harsh realities of life.

“ You better get out of bed before Mom comes up here and smacks the living daylights out of you.” Says my older by 10 minutes twin brother with a slight grin on his face. He had dark black hair and soft green eyes. With a semi strong jawline that showed enough to make girls chase after him like obedient dogs. Me on the other hand is almost the opposite of him except for our eyes; people still question us when we say we are twins. I have long thick red hair that reaches a little past my mid-back. My face is round with a very slight jawline and a couple of small freckles on my cheek.

“Eli get out of my room right now or i’ll give Mom a real reason to smack me once i'm done with you”

“Geez, okay i’ll get out. I'm just saying that she used your full name so I would choose what you do next very carefully.” Holding up his hands Eli slowly turns around and walks out of my room. Groaning, I sit up and get dressed into my school uniform. On my way downstairs I could almost feel Moms' anger. Not sure why she was angry yet but I knew I wasn't going to like the lecture.

“Miranda Leigha Cartes I just received mail from your homeroom teacher that you weren't in class yesterday, again.” She looked at me with such intensity that I was quite sure she was going to bore holes through my body. “Why do you do this Mira?” Her face relaxes as she sits down in her spot at the table “This can affect your scores on your tests.” with a sigh she takes a sip of her coffee and starts rubbing her face.

“Sorry Mom, you're right i’ll stop from now on.” I sit down in the chair next to hers.

“Your 16th birthday is tomorrow and new studies have shown that more rebellious kids don't develop the best gifts and I refuse to raise a hindrance.”

I hated when she used that word. They described the people who were delayed with their gifts who as the end result usually have really low and weak gifts or they are the people who don't gain any at all. Either way people like that get taken away for lowland farm labor or factory work.

“Our family might not have the best gifts but in the end they are enough for us to have lasted this long in society. It is hard enough already for us to get by after what happened with your father so I will not be having you mess up our family legacy. If your gift is delayed even the tiniest amount I will personally drag you to the city officials to take you away so don’t you even try with me right now young lady.”

I know she means well and I understand why she is being so hard on me right now. Dad since the incident has now been marked a terrorist and is against the law to even say his name. We weren't even allowed a funeral for him just got some ashes in a jar and a letter explaining how they were “sorry” for our loss. I looked away from her not sure how I was supposed to respond without the result being me getting a beating.

“Well what do you have to say for yourself; huh?” She looks at me with that jugey critical mothering look

“ I don’t know what you want me to say,” shrugging I start to stand up hoping I can start to wiggle myself out of this conversation  “I just don’t think that it's not really that important what I get because either way my life is gonna turn up s**t.”

“Young lady!” She stands up real quick “How dare you use that kind of language and tone in this house, i don't care what you think is going to happen or not you are not a precognition and can not see the future so until you can you will not say anything close to what just came out of your mouth.”

“Whatever.” rolling my eyes I grab my school bag and start to head to the door “ see you after school.”

“ Fine but you need to be home in time so that we can prepare you for tomorrow.” and like that she turns around and stomps up the stairs.

“Wow you really pissed her off.” letting out a chuckle Eli grabs his school bag by the door

“Yeah well she can go burn in hell cuz I couldn't care less for her lectures on how much of a disappointment I am to her” opening the door I let Eli walk past me and go outside first.

“She's not exactly wrong you know.” His expression got real serious suddenly “you do need to actually start to care about how your life is going to turn out.”

“ I honestly don't want to be having this conversation with you right now,” I turn and close the door “ I hear enough of this from Mom. I don’t need to hear it from you too.”

“ But you do because Mom isn't getting it through your thick engostatisical skull that you're gonna end up working in the factory.” I walked past him trying to get myself out of this conversation knowing that in the end he was probably going to win this and I didn’t want to deal with that. All of a sudden I feel his hand on my shoulder stopping me from going any further.

“Promise me and I mean it, promise me that you're actually going to start to care that you have a life ahead of you.” He gives me that concerned brother look.

“Mira!” I turn to see Chris, my best friend in the entire world waving to me from across the street. Sighing with relief I take this chance to get myself out of this.

“ Okay fine, whatever.” I turn and start to run before he could lecture me on how not convincing my answer was.

“ Oh god I know that face,” Says Chris as I approach her, “ what happened?”

“ The usual me not giving a care in the world right now about how my life is gonna turn out cuz I know no matter what I do at this point nothing's gonna change.” She turns to me giving a slight sympathetic look.

“ You know they are not exactly wrong.” I turn to her and give her a look that shows I’m not in the mood for her to be criticizing my life choices too. “Okay fine your right you don’t need to be hearing this from me too but just keep what they told you in mind.”

“ Your one to say your family has amazing gifts my family since the war has been barely on the line of the worst weakest gift you can get and getting accepted into society.” Rolling her eyes, Chris sighs because she knows i'm right. Her family is one of the founding families that this society is built up from since the war. She lives in the large rich neighborhoods where everything is put in front of them and all the children get married to rich and good looking spouses. It's amazing that me and her are friends. To make things worse Chris is stunning she practically has guys running after her constantly. She has piercing icy blue eyes that in the sun are stunning to look at. Her hair is blond and about the length of mine just not as thick.

“ You know not to use my lifestyle against me. It's not my fault I live with all of the snobby, sad excuses of human people.” Chris has never really liked the way she lives. She’s always thought it was unfair that as people around her are prospering other people are barely getting by with scraps.

“You’re right, I'm sorry, I’m just not in the mood right now.” I say with a sigh I never meant to say things like that to her but I'm just not that good with controlling my emotions, I never have been. Mom says I get it from my Father but in reality I'm quite sure it's from her through and through.

“Okay well enough of this conversation we need to hurry or we will be late for homeroom.” With a smile glad that I finally have the topic behind me I start walking with her to school.

Walking into homeroom I see my three other close friends. We are all a small group but pretty close knit together.             They were sitting in the back corner of the room taking up five seats with bags on two of them to save them for me and Chris. Two of our friends, a boy and girl were sitting in the far two left chairs. The girl Ana had her head on the boy whose name is Mark. Ana and Mark are one of the main “couples” in our class. They are both attractive with brown hair and eyes and both of them have the “perfect” body.  Since they don't have their powers yet they can’t actually be a couple. Noone can get together until they have their gifts. Our gifts depending on how powerful and rare they are will depend on what lifestyle we will be put in and who we get married too. Since their families are very similar they shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Both of their families are in the middle of all high in power like Chris family whereabouts mine, we are hanging on by a thread. The third Jax, was sitting in front of Ana and Mark and was trying desperately to find something to get him away from Ana and Mark. Jax has dirty blond hair that reaches a little past his ears and soft hazel eyes. He has that surfer dude body that most girls swoon over but Jax doesn't return the feeling.

“ Finally you guys are here,” exclaims Jax giving Ana and Mark a small sideways look. “ these two have been at it as if they are glued to each other since before i got here.” He moves the backpacks making room for Chris and I.

“ Yo, lovebirds get a room.” Says Chris a little too loudly making other people turn to look at Ana and Mark.

“ Sorry.” Says Ana blushing a little obviously embarrassed that everyone was looking at them. Mark on the other hand looked the same he always was; calm and collected.

“ Don’t apologize,” Says Mark putting a small smirk on his face “They are just jealous because they can’t get any action.”

“ Oh shut up Mark,” I say, trying not to take this too into offense, “ You and Ana have been together for the past two years and all you have done is kiss.” I know they have wanted to take their relationship to the next level for a while but they are hesitant due to it is very much frowned upon to have sex before marriage.

“ Okay calm down guys let’s not get too heated here.” says Jax first looking at Mark then looking at me. I turn blushing a little. I have had a small thing for Jax for about a year and a half now but I have never built up enough courage to try and see if he has the same feelings for me. The bell rings which was almost a relief for me making it so that everyone can take their seat without anymore jabbing and spitting out hurtful things at each other. I open my planner as the teacher comes in to tell us important announcements and dates to remember. It was at this moment that I almost forgot entirely of what was still to happen tomorrow when I turn 16.
