we are all performers in a way....poets don't have the biggest audience, but those who attend are usually affected in some way by what we write.
I love your line "eyes travel from verb to phrase"
that is pretty much how I write.
and I do believe poems breathe...we give them life, they are our children...
they are conceived then breathe on their own.
