Watching

Watching

A Poem by Sam

Watching

For thousands of years our hearts have beaten as one,
In perfect rhythm with the pulsating earth
We breathe life into animals and humans, as you breathe life into us
Inside of us and on top of us living things dwell

For thousands of years we have been hiding, holding, and murmuring secrets
We know the paths that the enlightened ones walked
We know where the chipmunk lives
We know where the squirrel hides her nuts

For thousands of years we have stood here
We have felt the rich cool soil carrying nutrients to our roots
As the blue jay carries worms to her young
We feel the refreshing relief of the nectar of life

For thousands of years we have stood tall, proud, imposing
Many find us beautiful to look at, yet they are blind
They do not realize our importance
They see us but soon will forget

For thousands of years we have watched
We know the things humans wish to know
We know how the earth was before humans; we know how it will be after
For thousands of years after humankind has died, we will still stand, watching
