Sleep

Sleep

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

seven to eight hours

"
Lack of sleep damages the brain
causing higher incidence of stroke
The brain denied enough rest
will be damaged when it has awoke

Habits denying needed sleep
may bring a person some fame
But dying at sixty years later
means you are the one to blame

Seven or better eight hours
is what most bodies need
Dying in the productive years
you will pay the price of greed

Human bodies are very alike
but environments are not the same
Some burn the candle at both ends
just to get ahead in the game

If bodies were not mostly the same
humans would not have survived
Those who get enough rest
will be the ones long-lived

Our DNA and immune system
was given happily by mom and dad
Why waste this wonderful gift
by sleep deprivation that's bad

Tonight is the best time to start
you know this poem tells the truth
You are smart enough to know
you no longer are a hapless youth

My Father could have lived a full life
as his father lived to 99
But he slept four hours every night
his stroke at 73 was not fine
