Maturation

Maturation

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

or just growing up

"

We know a person changes

in the years as they grow up

After many spills and dribbles

they learn to drink from a cup

Learning to do anything

requires giving it a try

When we manage to succeed

usually effort is why

To avoid some mistakes

common to our early years

We tried hard to emulate

behavior of successful peers

Growing up is called maturation

the maturing of the mind

But that is insufficient

without learning to be kind

There will be little praise

for the way a person acts

If they cannot deal with changes

and refuse to face the facts

We look forward to a long life

until our body goes south

Resulting in bad feelings

and being down in the mouth

Trying not to show this change

that others might see in us

Even when we don't feel it

smiling should be a plus

Smiling can do wonders

if you try to make it last

Just think of all the good times

that we had in the past
