Learning

Learning

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

for survival

"

Some can and some can't

and we wonder why

When birds can do it

as well as the fly

Not the size of the brain

it is obvious to see

Such is the act called learning

and it will always be

As with all such acts

we need to know more

What, how and why

is learning called lore

With everything that is said

its a function of words

Except watching what flies do

as well as the birds

When flies can't escape

the action of the swat

They haven't learned the danger

like the person being shot

Some might believe

that survival isn't learned

And humans are not to blame

so why should we be concerned

Do we say those who escape

are just being more shrewd

As in knowing a person

is behavior that is lewd

We watch the birds

and the way they fly

But humans cannot do this

if they don't want to die
