Waiting

Waiting

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

not for Godot

"
A minute till the gun
anticipating the breeze
It will be a starboard start
one that's sure to please

The family came to watch
I know they want to see a win
Everyone came to see
what condition we are in

When the gun is fired
the bullet will quickly come
We will get what we had coming
because what we did was dumb

If this was only travel
to some far away place
The bell would ring for parting
we would get up and take our place

When we are gone from sight
others will be waiting here
Trying to conceal their sadness
or should they give a cheer

Their wait will soon be over
the guard will clear the room
Should they wait for the hearse
to take them to the tomb

Don't ask and don't tell
your sorrow is your own
Act your grieving part
do it without a groan

When your turn comes later
you can cry without the tears
You have always waited bravely
never showing your fears
