Writing

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

lasts forever

"
The effort to write a poem
can delay dementia's start
Exercise of the brain cells
is no doubt the best part

Brains at sixty five
may be on a downward path
At eighty two it may not be true
but aging is never a laugh

Our body with its gift of life
has carried us so well
Be careful and don't fall down
or there is little more to tell

Every body will wear out
first with a part that's weak
There could be a fix
which we may have to seek

When too many parts
begin to show their wear
We knew this was coming
with the best kind of care

Though we look for a solution
as foolish as this sounds
The weeks still go by
and we lose more pounds

We used to walk a lot
sometimes even three miles
Now we creep along carefully
with brave pretended smiles

The truth is in the living
however long we make it last
Now whatever happens
we know our die was cast
