work

work

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

has changed

"
When having a job
meant doing some work
There was no shortage of jobs
where you worked without a perk

The work desired today
is mostly about talk
Words that few can say
and fewer understand

Rhyming works well in a poem
that few workers understand
The few who still work
may be tilling the land

That was real work
that a healthy person could do
Hours and energy
spent farming the land

All magnificent structures
were built at great cost
To the backs of the workers
many of whom were lost

They lived shorter lives
suffering a lot of strain
With bosses who ignored them
when they tried to complain

They really couldn't complain
if they wanted the work
Or some unemployed worker
would get the job

This poem tells the sad story
causing the poor economy
Today job holders hate to work
if you look you can see
