Pleasures

Pleasures

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

of the good life

"

Pleasures once tasted
can become a human need
repeated again and again
for the hunger they feed

New events touch nerves
that may not forget
The tastes in our future
could be powerfully set

With our memory still alive
in the way they made us feel
The drive to continue them
will have a great appeal

Recalling our personal past
there is less need to say more
We know best what we feel
that's what tastes are for

A pleasure should not be guilty
of causing anyone to feel pain
Should this ever happen
we must immediately refrain

What we want can only be
appreciated by our need
We cannot know what others feel
hopefully not just greed

Failing to enjoy a pleasure
could be the time for a change
Substituting other activities
will give the needed exchange

If what we do for pleasure
helps us stay healthy
We may have a long life
better than being wealthy
