Chronicle

Chronicle

A Poem by Sam Freeland

Personal history in our own words
is only a partial recollection
The events that we remember
 will need some helpful interjection

The tales that we relate
are memories left in our brain
Plus the inserted passages
to help completing the refrain

Repetition fosters our image
in order to get the story straight
Confirmed by interpretation
leaving less reason for debate

Editing what is in our memory
enables our version of truth to be told
Without some added facts
our chronicle could never be sold

We need to repeat our history often
so the memories won't slip away
Writing the tales in poetry
is by far a superior way

Belief in our thoughts being original
supports what is in our mind
With our wider knowledge of history
there may be more that we can find

When younger we learned to exaggerate
it always improved what we said
Now in our efforts to write poetry
we hope that some will be read

If not, what we did to pass the time
was much better than sitting still
It was all a great experience
you can read about in my will
