Gifts

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

from the past

"
Poems are like telephone calls
gifts created in the mind
Both take courage to initiate
obvious proof of being kind

Kindness that had an early start
before we knew what it meant
We learned it at our Mother's knee
where her love created our bent

Real love is never an accident
it is the expression of the soul
Unfortunately not widely learned
when desperation takes its toll

Her kindness melted all our fears
showing us what kindness can do
It is acts that teach one how to love
and how to share the feelings too

Girls have a decided advantage
they could be a mother some day
This gives them a head start
in learning the motherly way

Most poems are written by females
with subjects of loving and being kind
It is practice of motherhood and caring
the kindness their children will find

Behaviors we naturally inherit
we get in DNA of cells at our birth
The environment that surrounds our lives
is the way we learn what has worth

Males have a different history
reflected in the stories they write
Practice in how to be a man
and be able to stand up and fight
