A Future Uncertain

A Future Uncertain

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

if you live long enough

"
Facing an uncertain future
and not liking many things new
May indicate some future problems
and for most aging people it is true

Forgetting important tasks
is one of the ways it all begins
Something is amiss in the brain
and its not just about the sins

Brain cells no longer function
in the ways they used to do
Forgetting the way back home
and the friends that they had too

When this takes place more often
the condition may be getting worse
Instead of one's life going forward
it seems to be going in reverse

The past is easier to remember
with yesterday being not so clear
To others you may appear normal
but secretly you feel a new fear

Dementia is a human condition
that will be very hard to admit
But  trying to ignore the changes
will not help one little bit

Better to find a support group
and the care that they can give
There may be many more years
in the time you still have to live

In case you are wondering how
I learned that most of this is true
Having some of these symptoms
has happened to me if not you
