Longevity

Longevity

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

with age and wisdom

"

There will come a time
when everyone finds out
If they want to live longer
they must learn to do without

This behavior applies
to our actions every day
If we fail to see the hazards
life will not go our way

As a youth we didn't know
how short life could be
We ignored the dangers
in our excitement to be free

The world was ours
to be enjoyed on our terms
We gambled away the time
amid our parent's concerns

It gave us many pleasures
as we look back on that time
We did things no one knew
and didn't consider it a crime

If it was luck or being careful
it didn't matter much then
By not changing what we do now
we might not be so lucky again

As awareness grows with years
we can try to use more care
Wasting time with foolishness
will never get us there

We depend on our longevity
which was given as a gift
But using the time more carefully
is how we give our life a lift
