Promise

Promise

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

giving hope with truth

"
The ups and downs of promise
are not always what we expect
Promises are plans of the mind
many times they are not kept

Legality by law has helped
but interpretation may not agree
Judgements may be much different
and not what we hope to see

If the promises you make are worthy
they will share the place with truth
But when they are not kept
you will be labeled as uncouth

Language expands understanding
and a promise is a pledge one can make
We are known by the truth of our promises
and also by the promises we break

Words we use will have substance
when leading to actions others can see
Truth gets meaning from the behavior
of those who choose to agree

Any form of behavior
that refuses to use compromise
Will weaken our hope for civilization
as it follows the path of the unwise

Survival is a shared endeavor
often very difficult to achieve
The benefit is having more peace
wars will only make us grieve

We only have one life
to make the planet a better place
The promise of a peaceful future
is the life we hope to face
