Sugar

Sugar

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

so good...and so bad

"

When does eating sugar start
this dangerous habit in food
Seeking much more than we  need
to improve what we call our mood

The first taste sets the stage
because our tongue finds it so good
Every time we encounter it
we like it more than we should

Even if we had never tasted sugar
our tongue was ready and waiting
This inherited taste for sweetness
liking it would be an understating

What we like is caused by our genes
and the effect it has on our tongue
Right there on the top surface
sensitive to sugar since we were young

The first food we taste
encounters the sugar sensitive nerves
Mother's milk with its faint sweetness
is just what our body deserves

But cane sugar and other substitutes
are the problem and how it begins
If we were content with sweet fruit
it would prevent a multitude of sins

Cane kills the taste for protein
and is bad for the teeth
Candy and sugared soft drinks
make you fat and causes grief

Too much cane does the damage
so be careful how much you eat
You need to avoid obesity
even though sugar is such a treat
