Seeing

Seeing

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

a complex act

"
Two eyes get waves of light
to illuminate what we see
Just the beginning event
that requires all three

The third is the brain
where real seeing takes place
Using images from the retina
to describe the world we face

Our threefold nervous system
uses data created by light
Then using our healthy brain
to get everything right

Centers in the parietal cortex
located at the top of the brain
Sort out messages received
and do it with no strain

Damage to these centers
result in spatial neglect
Interfering with clear vision
as anyone might suspect

Losing the sense of space
due to damage from a fall
Takes away what you see
and the ability to recall

The effects of spatial neglect
limit what a victim can perceive
Reducing perception of space
needed in order to believe

Our brain uses copious data
in every act of seeing
Giving immense pleasure
to every human being
