Living Alone

Living Alone

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

not the best choice

"

Living alone costs more
due to the boredom that we feel
Without connections with friends
our life ceases to be real

Our start in life was a gift
and mother was the only one
Requirements of life from her
were how our life was begun

Sharing early years with our mom
were the only life we knew
Her warmth and tender caring
helped every moment too

We can never completely forget
those early times our life had
They were embedded in our memory
before we learned how to be sad

The real cost of being alone
is losing connections we have known
Especially when the distance
from our loved ones has grown

The distance gave us freedom
to avoid problems of being too near
But the silence is now deafening
more so than would appear

When our choice is to deny
the need for friends in what we do
We miss a chance for some happiness
and the sharing with them too

Every problem that we face
deals with learning how to cope
Without help we get from friends
even our survival has less hope
