The Ghose of Halloween

The Ghose of Halloween

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

not a friend

"
Not a misspelling of ghost
it's the name of something worse
 Ghosts cannot hurt you
but Ghose is a dangerous curse

Ghose also known as sucrose
lurks in so much of our food
In the cookies, cakes and candy
we eat to improve our mood

Sucrose is a hidden enemy
that our body stores as fat
Leading to lethargy and diabetes
we don't need any more of that

Sugar sellers don't want us to know
what their cane can do to us
That is why they call it Pure Cane
hoping to avoid any unwelcome fuss

Thin people tout it's advantages
and children all love cane's taste
But the over-weight usually die sooner
and that causes a serious waste

The pleasure of eating this sweet
lasts  for all of our days
Becoming a kind of addiction
and it's only our health that pays

As kids we learned to love candy
especially on Ghose Halloween
It changed how we like healthy food
while taking away a chance to be lean

Care for our kids is well known
so there is something we should do
Help them avoid sucrose carbohydrates
by giving them fruits and proteins too

Nice way to get a healthy message across. I like the way the poet didn't misspell ghost (as every reader would assume - though I almost didn't read the poem because I expected the poet to be slovenly about spelling and graammar). All in all, the poem works well.
