Life's Challenge

Life's Challenge

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

plan carefully

"
All humans have discovered
a challenge they must face
It will be a battle to the end
as they try to keep pace

We look around and see
how youth hurries along
Remembering what we did
singing our hopeful song

Life is a glorious gift
that we now appreciate
We had inklings of it then
that acts determined our fate

Many choose to believe
their life will begin again
Having hopeful satisfaction
they can live it better when

It has been a normal practice
to want more than we deserve
But what we have found
the world threw us a curve

It's so easy to strike out
when planning a home run
Just getting to first base
we could still join the fun

Reaching for the moon
may demonstrate our worth
Maybe we should remember
the meek will inherit the earth

The universe doesn't care
about anything humans do
It is best to believe in yourself
your friends and your family too

A nice easy poem to read with a subtle, but clear, message. I think the poet wants 'then' as the last word in the fourth stanza instead of 'when'. The last line of the 5th stanza would benefit from an active verb though I don't know how easy that would be without disrupting the meter. The last two lines of the 6th and 7th stanzas contrast nicely with the respective first two lines of each, but are hard to 'read'. In the 6th stanza because a contrasting word like 'but' is not there ('just' doesn't quite do it) and in the 7th stanza because there is no punctualtion to offset the contrasting elements (though after looking back a few times, the 'reading' becomes easier). Good writing.
