Promises

Promises

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

and your future

"

The fiction of the mind

that gives people hope

is not necessarily kind

to those who can't cope

Depending on a falsehood

can help for awhile

as long as you don't know

it can surely beguile

Tomorrow and the future

can look very bright

until the truth becomes obvious

and causes the fright

We all know how promises

have driven us on

with their captivating lies

until they are gone

In our youth we didn't know

what the future would bring

we just wanted to hope

we would hear the bells ring

As time revealed

what had really taken place

the lack of the peals

was very hard to face

There is help from the kind

when we feel the pain

if we can accept reality

and come in out of the rain

When we stop letting promises

control what we do

our lives will have more meaning

and a brighter future too

This is a good attempt to present the modern myths about believes, hopes and disappointment.
Thank you!
