Human Choices

Human Choices

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

and their survival

"

Design and invent

we in the world need you

it is true we can't stop

doing what we like to do

Work without our help

you have a truly creative task

we hope you won't think

this is too much to ask

Too many in our population

choose to actively multiply

with the help of creationism

religions try to tell us why

The weight of our growth

will likely hasten our end

but as in all animal systems

its a result we didn't intend

The loss of our numbers

will soon make it clear

that surviving humans

have very much to fear

Headlong we go

being religiously inspired

as we use up the world

and only getting tired

By inventing the truth

instead of something worthwhile

we destroy our future

living our life of denial

When our time here

is over and done

the universe will not mind

that we are gone

It will still continue on

giving others a chance

maybe they will be smarter

in the way they dance

The last stanza expresses what I believe in the most, yes.
This is a tough, provocative poem that shows our nature,
that because of our made-up beliefs we can convince
ourselves that evrything we do is justifiable.
I enjoyed this deep, challenging write.
