Acedia's Weakness

Acedia's Weakness

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

and a sad future

"
Acedia

Our self-imposed denial
giving stature to our sin
repudiating the memory
of any desire ever to win

The loss we feel is better
as we sanctify our mind
any caring will only fetter
the future we hope to find

Superiority is our goal
to achieve what life denied
avoiding what lessors do
with their hopeless prayers inside

The emptiness is unpleasant
we see it as being strong
since weaker men can't do it
we feel they must be wrong

Dependence on others
is the absence of voice
what acedia gives to us
is by far a better choice

And so we limp along
seeking martyrdom in our ways
missing the blessings of prayer
engaged in a hopeless craze

If you know someone
who missed what love has shown
give them a gift of your caring
they may feel less alone

As they wonder about the gift
feeling the warmth in what you do
it may be just the lift
to appreciate what love can do
