Avoid Acedia

Avoid Acedia

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

if you need help, get it

"
Acedia

When you practice no virtue
 you may be courting sin
causing friends and believers
to question the state you are in

Since you may have decided
 prayer is not for you
tell them it is only boredom
with what they choose to do

The world is a place
where we can live out our days
being reckless and resigned
to our indiscriminate ways

With no intention to engage
in what heaven can give
we remain disinterested
in how the saints want to live

If we seem seriously forlorn
with no successful way out
our negligence and passivity
will help us ignore being devout

One can avoid being despondent
living in the cave of despair
but will stupor and torpidity
make life any less fair

Unconcern and apathy
enjoy hopelessness and greed
but they give one an appetite
for the lust on which we feed

Whatever course you choose
as you look to the days ahead
it is certainly most likely
you will experience being dead
