For those we love

For those we love

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

and care for

"
When needs become greed
   loving gets a new name
 Effort to plant love's seed
   will never be the same

If we wish for much more
   than our friends can endure
We will destroy the friendship
its time to find a cure

By giving control to our ego
and trying to own every moment
We lose the ability to know
   how to prevent the torment

Self-importance is the problem
it tells us we have to win
Taking us down a dark path
   destroying us from within

These powerful drives we have
   are inherited from the past
Badly needed by humans
trying to make their life last

Today we have to find a way
for these needs to be controlled
Nothing will ever be easy
as so often you have been told

If we try for more selfless sharing
we will benefit from the change
When we find our way to caring
life will have a wider range

There is so much loss by winning
when we see our loved one lose
We need to find a new beginning
with giving being what we chose

Using words to describe our feelings
we may see where we have erred
Letting love control our dealings
to help us enjoy what we have shared
