Colonel Jack

Colonel Jack

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

the real Jack

"
When you like this man called Jack
in the way we know this guy
you know what a fine man he is
and about this we would never lie

You have learned from what he did
that his life was more than great
what he has done since being a kid
is showing others how not to hate

Since everyone knows its Jack
as we see him come in the door
we may even stand up to greet him
to show it is he who we were waiting for

Every week he arrives on Sunday
bringing along his loyal group
he doesn't need to see a menu
and seldom asks for the soup

Colonel Jack always gives us a smile
that everyone is glad to see
he deserves the respect we show him
and never expects to eat for free

When the waitress brings his meal
you see him happily enjoying his fill
sometimes offering to pay for his group
for everything on the bill

Please find something respectful
to say to this man of ninety-two years
he may think you are just full of bull
not always believing what he hears

Join me in how we honor him
he is well known by his Milford friends
we have all learned long ago
that respect for his country never ends

I have enjoyed writing this poem
none of us have ever wondered why
his sweetheart Clara still loves him
she knows he's a wonderful guy

Here's to Jack! I liked it even though some of the rhyme scheme seems a bit forced (espeically the soup part). Tells a story of what seems to be a very good man.
