Pain

Pain

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

no friend of mine

"
pain is in your mind
its your body crying foul
no matter what kind
of living in denial

as you wait for it to end
hoping that it will
it does its best to send
you screaming up a hill

bodies evolved having pain
to keep you in touch
they say it will help you to live
doctors tell you this much

when the pain has passed
your memory does forget
you hope it won't come again
but that is only a poor bet

it is hard to tell another
it may say that I am weak
 can't I have some drug
before it sends me up a creek

this awful state of mind
I believe I must explain
I truly hope to find
a way to end this bane

as soon as I can say
that pain has left me alone
should it ever come again
I will not be at home

It's true, living with pain twists the strongest mind and the weakest mind alike. But here is where it has twisted mine; if pain were to cease, any sort of pain, in my life, it wouldn't be living any longer. Not literal death, that is something that will happn with or without pain, but my life will cease to matter for me. Because with struggle coms pain of some sort an I do believe that as a human I seek out struggle so my life isn't pointess. No matter how often I wish for struggle to stop, only for a litte while at least, I know I don't turly mean it.

Well done, Sam! Living with pain does such strange things to the mind and it is never easy.

Yep--I know about that. I won't bother telling you my pain stories, but my tolerence for it has been well-tested. A great poem, Sam. Sam
