The Gulf

The Gulf

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

equality, the myth of life

"
there is no foreseeable end
to the losses in our lives
some experience more I guess
while others seem to have less

while chance plays a big part
other events will have a say
those who make better choices
will likely get their way

though accidents affect the numbers
there are paths to more hard luck
by ignoring many safety efforts
your choices may run amuck

there are faults in any plan
some are not incidental
they keep us from doing what we can
and they can be truly eventful

since business is just like life
with effort there can be a success
those who can't deal well with life
will have to enjoy much less

this is about the gulf between
those who have more than they need
and those who have a life that's mean
effort may be the difference indeed

it may seem that life is unfair
not getting to enjoy what others can
it is not that people don't care
it has forever been part of life's plan

by coming to terms with what is
and developing your own best plan
you may never be called a whiz
but you're as good as any man
