Listen

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

to learn

"

Of all the moments we spend
listening has to be the best
From our birth until our death
hearing sounds is better than the rest

Whenever we stop to listen
the sound is the mind's best friend
From learning to hearing our own voice
the pleasures never seem to end

Bird songs such a quiet treasure
music that inspires the mind
As they sing to talk to each other
what better music could anyone find

The murmurs of love from our mother
tell us our life has its own song
To help our speech last a lifetime
and tell us that we belong

We soon learn of the danger
in every sound that comes anew
Helping the mind to be selective
in almost everything we do

Even our very own survival
depends on knowing essential sounds
Keeping us from wandering away
and ending out of bounds

The debt we owe to musicians
will never need to be repaid
Their music is our happiness
    most enjoyable sounds ever made

There are so many examples
of the sounds we want to hear
Listen carefully to those you like
a benefit greater than may appear
