Reddy Red Head

Reddy Red Head

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

an interesting bird

"
A red-headed woodpecker
once came and sat on the deck
If he had tried to fly in
his red head would've been a wreck

I guess he chose not to
fly through the slider door
The glass would have stopped him
and he would have been no more

This new slider door
lets in a lot more light
Stopping heat from the sun
and making the room more bright

I see birds sitting outside on the rail
watching me through the glass
Reflection from the slider
may warn them they cannot pass

I used to chase other Reddys
to record their rat-a-tat sound
It was always deep in the woods
where they could be found

A pileated cousin of Reddy's
once sat on a near outside birch
He was only five feet away
looking for bugs in his search

This was a beautiful sight
which I will never forget
As I stood and stared at him
no closer could I get

If you ever see any Reddy
please say hello for me
Woodpeckers are a special sight
pecking away at a tree
