A Winter of Memories

A Winter of Memories

A Poem by Sally Hope
"

You only miss the sun when it starts to snow ...

"

 A WINTER OF MEMORIES

The roses are dead. Crystal snowflakes

Adorn the abandoned home we lived in.

I stop by sometimes, to gather the pieces of my life,

And contemplate if I could've made it alright.

MAY:

When we first met, our hearts did not race.

Yet our eyes did get drawn to each other's face.

The summer wind blew; all around arose anew:

The only broken dolls were me and you.

JUNE:

You - oh, why? - were the only thing in my mind.

The raindrops fell, but I flew high.

Touches were soft, kisses were grace.

The distance was closed - our hearts raced.

JULY:

The world welcomed us, and we welcomed the world.

The nights were a harmony, the days were a blur.

When the glorious lights lit up the night sky,

I saw my tinted images reflected in your eyes.

AUGUST:

The late summer wind blew in the dust and leaves.

We pretended we were still in bliss.

Holding hands; nonconformist stands;

We were treading on unmapped lands.

SEPTEMBER:

The first time I cried; the first time you lied;

The first time I let the roses die.

The autumn onset turned the green leaves red,

And I uttered the words that I'll always regret.

OCTOBER:

Autumn brought tears, and incarnation of our fears,

As the unwanted, unasked for, inevitable neared.

I saw the leaves fall, I heard the last call,

I gathered the letters and the broken dolls.

NOVEMBER:

When we last met, our gazes never scraped.

We neither felt love, nor any hate.

The November nights were the loneliest time,

But the tears didn't fall - my eyes were dry.

DECEMBER:

The roses are dead. Crystal snowflakes

Adorn the abandoned home we lived in.

I stop by sometimes, to gather the pieces of my life,

And contemplate if I could've made it alright.

Author's Note

Sally Hope
My first attempt at a love poetry (though it turned out to be sad in the end because, you know, I'm terrible with happy endings!). Hope you like it. Suggestions would be most welcome.

The reality is there are less happy endings than sad and I would rather read a sad believable ending than a far fetched happy one. I liked the monthly format and the emotion was real and engaging. There are on guarantees of happiness in life, it is what you make of it and are willing to invest into it so I find your poems ending perfect :~)

Very nice! I love the poem itself but I also love how you have arranged it on the page, going from month to month and following the relationship timeline. Very interesting! I also love the picture you have chosen as well. :)

True and you are very welcome!
The starting point keeps me wanting to read more as it portrays sadness.

It fumed out sorrow in me. A rose being dead portray happiness coming to an end, beautiful turning to ugly.... Nice write up

Wow this was beautiful. I love how you mapped out their lives with such detail and emotion. It's sad how many relationships do end like this..
