Why I Look So Tired

I walk to work with baggy eyes,

And there I find my bane,

The bane of my existence,

A short woman named Helga.

Helga snorts and laughs and says,

"You must've stayed up too late reading!"

"Go out for once! Get some fresh air!"

"You always look so gosh-dang tired."

"Why is it you're tired anyway?" she asks, grinning.

I smile to myself and lean forward,

And then I say, "You really want to know why I'm tired?"

"I stayed out late last night, preying upon helpless civilians out for a stroll.

"I approached them in a dark outfit and gutted them where they stood with a carving knife.

"I then took their torn intestines and placed them in separate bags.

"I took them for storage in my freezer room, maybe later to eat. And that's why I'm tired."

I begin to walk away when Helga says,

"You didn't really do any of that, right?"

I smile and open my suit for just a moment,

And inside is a carving knife.

I smile again and walk away.

Helga quit later that day.

A dark free-verse poem that came to me when I was thinking about the people that tell me to get out more. Uh...don't tell me to get out more, okay?

There's something to be said for a peaceful, homebound existence. . . come to think of it, you should probably stay home more often.
