Happiness

The word happy sounds temporary to me

You are, you were or you will be

A circumstance that will fade

Before you know it it's gone 

And life forces us to move on

When we wish it would have stayed

Happiness on the other hand

Is there even with sadness all around

When being happy is nowhere to be found

It is a view you need to see

A mentality you turn into reality

Happiness is an everlasting chase

A race to find your eternal happy place

It's desired because it's required

To live a life you can embrace

So those who have it are admired

But what happiness is for me

Doesn't have to be the same for you

So when I think the word through

The view of happiness I thought I knew

Becomes confusing and no longer true

It turns it into a complicated concept 

Yet it is as a simple construct too

So let me write and shed some light 

On this mess we call happiness

People are on that hakuna matata s**t

Don't worry and just be happy kid

If it were that simple why do you think

It is suicide people commit

Taking drugs they cannot quit

Drown sorrows drink after drink

Have weekly visits with a shrink

In my eyes people don't realize

These phrases only trivialize

A notion that takes devotion

Hard work and dedication

Of happiness this is the foundation

So when it's these phrases I read

It seems when you do not succeed

You are a person of failure

Instead of someone in need

That's why I see happiness as a luxury

Something not everybody can afford

But it's a goal we all work toward

It's a cruise we all want to board

It's the first prize of every emotion

But not everyone can sail this ocean

And often this is the nail in people's coffin

So the kind of happiness I want to achieve

Is one that doesn't have a reason

Then it cannot be taken away from me

And it won't be able to leave

I think this comes down to inner peace

Acceptance of your own presence

Love for your own essence

To gain strength from your pain

To complain but remain sane

It's an easy thing to say

A difficult thing to do

You won't be happy every day

But if you can think this way

Your happiness will always stay
