If I Leave First

If I Leave First

A Poem by Lala

Dear whoever you will be,

This is written by me to be read by you
Words you will see when I am gone
Words that are on my mind right now
Which will have meaning later on
We have yet to meet but before I forget
I still want to write them down

At the moment we are still strangers
Unfamiliar faces as I write on these pages
Going places without each other
Creating memories on our own
Circulating as fate is waiting
For us to meet and no longer be alone
For that moment I write these lines
For when I am yours and you are mine
For when our paths finally combine
And we will spend our life together
However, nothing can last forever
All good things must come to an end
Life is something we cannot control
No loophole to escape its death toll
Eventually time will run out
But to be honest, that doesn't matter
What counts is what you will remember
And that's what I want you to think about

Without a doubt one of us will leave first
If it is me I wish it could be reversed
Because being left behind is the worst
We'll never be ready when the day comes
That my last breath escapes my lungs
But for the moments you feel alone
When my life has been set in stone
Instead of wishing I stayed
I hope you can cherish what we had
And retrace the memories we made
Think about how things were
And not what could have been
Look at the bigger picture we took
And reminisce the places we have seen
But also embrace the small things in between
Think about every game we played
That you were beat when we used to compete
How you claim you've let me win
Because you know that gets under my skin
Or how you pretended you cared
About pointless facts I shared
Because you knew they gave me joy
So you would listen to them anyway

I am speaking hypothetically right now
How our future will truly be is unknown
But theoretically this can be a reality
And as I keep that in my thoughts
I wrote this for you to see
To someone I still have to come across
Scribbling these words to be seen by you
Reading with eyes I have yet to look into
Hoping you won't change from feeling blessed
And rearrange to a life of feeling cursed
That you won't stop looking ahead
But find support in looking back
So whenever you miss me
Just close your eyes and count to three
Know that in your mind I will always be
So please remember, if I go before you do
You can keep me alive in your memory
