Family Reconciliation

Family Reconciliation

A Poem by RHEA CROSLEY
"

What is the force that is so strong that keeps the mighty from admitting there wrong.

"

What is the force that's so strong
that keeps the mighty from admitting they're wrong.
Reconciliation between family members can take so long.

Hard when there's lingering rain from a storm.
The gulf is wide to cross when hearts are torn.

The words, I was wrong or I apologize, seem heavy to move.
We strain from leaving shore while holding back lava that's love.

The timing needs to be right, we say.
Then breaks forth the words of day

The words of forgiveness, the hug, the tears.
Next comes sweet release of a heavy load and fears.

Why those same words would be so easy now.
Why so hard, so resistant when love demanded we bow.

Could it be that are minds where blind by pride.
Were we its victim enslaved from inside?

There's so much truth in this poem and, isn't it sad when relatives have trouble communicating?!

You've used such fine phrases:

'Hard when there's lingering rain from a storm.
The gulf is wide to cross when hearts are torn.'

and those words suggest the tears as well as the stormy weather disagreements can be likened to.

'Could it be that are minds where blind by pride.
Were we its victim enslaved from inside?'

not quite sure about that first line directly above, but certainly people can be trapped by being too proud, or maybe too worried about showing weakness, to make up and make better.

Thank you letting me read this poem, it shows a great deal of insight on a sad, sad situation and has been put together very fluently.

Great truth indeed my friend. You have penned this so well.
Its not all that hard to say 'sorry' or 'I forgive you', is it?

Apparently it is.....is it EGO or PRIDE or just STUBBONESS?
I wish I knew the answer, because precious time is passing
and one day the "I'm sorries and the forgiving" will be too late.
I think that is a good thing for anyone to remember.

Have a lovely day Rhea!

Helena :)

Every little bit of this poem was great ! I do believe that pride is the core of why family is so slow to offer these apolagies. It is sad to see people go for so long carrying around this resentment for years. Even forgetting why they even started to in the first place. You manage to paint a beautiful picture from such an ugly subject. You do this with grace and skill. Many kudos my friend .

A well written poem. Reconcilliation is a wonderful thing when a family can be strong and pull back together in harmony. Thank you for sharing. Debileah

Pride is a sorry state of affairs isn't it? And people would rather choke than apologise. I don't know why this is such an issue, I guess it is because we are all individuals uniquely the same? And I think also that once someone does apologise it becomes contagious like the Flu!! It is getting that first apology...that is the difficulty.
Cheers, hope you are well Rhea,
Helen :-)

The ending of a discord and the renewing of friendly relationships between disputing family members can be an arduous task. If a traumatic event takes place that prevents reconciliation, someone will not have closure and the pursuing guilt, could last a lifetime. Pride is usually the biggest 'sin' preventing a resolve .. Something that should be 'swallowed' ASAP.

Great write, highlighting the futility of not forgiving the ones we profess to love (blood is thicker then water).

"Could it be that are minds where blind by pride.
Were we its victim enslaved from inside?"

A wonderful conclusion to a great poem. Family is the most important unit on this planet, and I think that many people abuse it, or put so many other things in front of it such as work, pride, jealousy, anger, money, fame, etc. We see it everyday. Our family is there, nothing we can do to erase that, unless we disown them or vice versa. My family has been there for me through thick and thin, even when I felt they couldn't hold on anymore. I pushed them away, but realized the men I went to didn't truly take my pain away, but created more, but their arms were always open. It's then you relaize how much you loved them. but yes, months I went witout speaking to them, and they were mad at me, and it feels so long until you mend the ties. I feel you in this poem, I really do.

thanks for sharing.

This touches me on a very sad and personal level, Rhea
as I'm sure it does many.

I lost my sister in 1990 in a car accident. I loved her
dearly. The evening before her accident we had an
argument. Sisters do that of course, but our last
words to eachother were angry ones. I've never forgiven
myself, and no matter how many people try to convince
me otherwise, which I do appreciate...the truth is,
I've never forgiven myself and probably never will.

I can't say this enough to whoever reads this.....

Tell the people you love that you love them!! OFTEN.
And please, don't ever hesitate to say I'm sorry. Or you
just may be.

Thank you for sharing this Rhea.
Strong message, and very well written.
