A Raindrop In The Sea

A Raindrop In The Sea

A Story by Max Moore
"

A little tale about the multiverse theory. Written while listening to Bon Iver and James Blake.

"

We set our scene upon an ocean. A vast expanse of blue without any trace of an island or any civilization whatsoever. There’s a lack of anything but water in this blue void for the time being, but it provokes a sense of peace and serenity. It exists like this for some time, but eventually, the clouds begin to congregate within the sky before overtaking it’s lighter hue and causing it to become a pale shade of gray. Then, the first drop hits the water. This may not seem like anything of relevance, but what if we went back a step and took a look at what was hidden within this single drop, the truth may surprise you. Inside this drop, we come to a beach, the setting sun casts an orange glow along the sea, here, we are at peace. There is nothing that can hurt us, nothing bad will ever happen here. However, the very next drop contains a war-torn city, bombs rain down on houses like sand through the hourglass. Sirens wail in the distance, panicked civilians hide in underground bunkers. Soldiers fight valiantly against their oncoming foes. This landscape creates a strong sense of distress and panic, a nearly polar opposite of what we saw before. Back to the ocean, the light drizzle becomes a downpour, the sky turning black like midnight, lightning causes bright flashes in the darkness while thunder rumbles not long afterward. The deluge rages for hours, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Every single raindrop in this menace of a storm contains a new world, a whole new venture to be discovered. Selecting a few at random transports us first to a small village in a frigid tundra. We are invited inside their leader’s home, he asks us what we are doing here. “We have come from a higher place, we have seen all that exists.” Stunned, he replies with “Can you take me with you? I cannot bear this frozen wasteland any longer. We’re nearly out of food, and if I’m unable to fix things soon I will be overthrown and exiled. Please, I’ll do anything you ask of me.” You may take pity on this man, but if anyone is given the power of a god they’ll be driven mad in no time. This man could single-handedly destroy all of civilization as we know it if he is given that kind of power, so we must leave him here. This next drop takes us to a forest. It’s the dead of night, a blanket of stars glimmers in the dark sky. For a brief moment, it seems as though everything is calm, but that is quickly changed. We quickly feel a sudden heat burning through the air while a jet of fire blasts across the night above us. In the sky, we can faintly make out a long, serpentine creature soaring above us. It appears to be a dragon. “That’s ridiculous, a dragon is a thing of myth.” You’re probably thinking to yourself. Well, in these infinite universes, anything is possible, anything at all. If we leave this realm and proceed to the next, we find a ruined city with buildings turned on their sides and sand rising up above some houses. Clearly, something very bad has happened here as the civilization seems to be destroyed. But we then turn our attention to spaceships in the horizons. Smaller, slim ships for personal use, as well as large freight transporters. A quick look around tells us that humans here are thousands of years more technologically advanced, and a sign nearby states that the area we’ve found ourselves in is a testing area for new weapons, which has been completely decimated by a bomb. I could keep going on and on all day long about the different places and universes we can find ourselves in, but you’re probably getting pretty impatient and ready for this story to be over. So, I’ll leave you with this, a single raindrop in the sea may not seem like much, but you never know what it may hide.
