The hidden AnimalA Poem by Tai Han XiaoThis is the first proper poem I've written, a sort of adaptation of a poem I wrote years ago.I’m a wolf. Charging through the forest, running like a storm. The woods are my home and they make me feel at peace like nowhere else.
I’m a wounded raven. Wishing to fly low from building to building, but knowing that I never can- that I’ll never have the miraculous feeling of the wind through my feathers and the adrenaline in my veins.
I’m a raccoon. Scuttering between the mountains of junk, finding the rare treasures that others would consider worthless. I bring them to my den, a collection of rusted gems that I hold in my hand. I stroke them gently, feeling calmer with each touch.
I’m a ghost. Floating through life- no personality, no hobbies, not knowing anything about anything. I possess people, picking up their likes and dislikes but unsure of who I am, and what I want. All I know for sure is that I often feel empty.
I’m at a circus. In a hall of strange mirrors, mirrors that show your true self. I go to see the mirrors every day, and every day I see something different. One day I see a blob of disgust and decay, a selfish animal who deserves nothing. Another day I see a lost human- one who gets a happy ending, a happy life. Whichever reflection I see, I hope for the future. I hope for love. I hope for prosperity. I hope for happiness. But I’m so confused.
I’m a human. I’m looking for myself. Everyone says I have all the time in the world, but I feel the sands of the hourglass pouring through my fingers like water. I’m a human. Young, lost, confused. Sometimes I look at my skin and feel content, other times I look and will cuts to seep into it like vines. I’m human, and I don’t know what I’m doing with my life. But I’m alive and luckier than some, the ones with no home or family or friends. I focus on that every day, no matter how empty I feel. Because there’s always a chance for that happy ending. © 2019 Tai Han XiaoAuthor's Note
