A Poem by SHEEMA HUQ

This One Page

Situated all over This One Page are swift, disorganised

scrawls of potent memories, bearing wild

conflictions of volitile intangibility.

Some conjour  nostalgic echoes of warmth,

intimacy, inspiration. Others are of loss, betrayal, isolation.

This One Page is laden with misspellings, vague hurried,

sporadic perceptions, grammatical blips, crossings out and

factual omissions.

This One Page was penned with ball point, fine tip, and

fountain and unintentionally found amongst an unfiled,

partially ordered, papery mountain, of old utility bills, bank

statements and other, obsolete, legally binding documents.

This One Page, a flimsy A4 lined, crumpled, creased

recycled jotter leaf, carries the weight and depth

of a mineral mine and it’s grand encasing reef.

This One Page, marks the end of a long relationship,

“to which neither of us could ever fully commit”.

A murky, reluctant, release to a messy, agonising grief.

An inexplicable beginning of a tran-sit-tory phase,

a silent aching........ a genuine relief.

This One Page.

Sounds like my writing process....

The oracles of Delphi used to write the prophecies on dried brown leaves, if you didn't read it soon enough, it would crumble and blow away.
I think with this piece, the oracles would be jealous. Nice observations.

Ouch. Recall. Formal and blunt. Warming then frigid. But not discarded.

Excellent.

Wow, This felt powerful with emotion. I love how it seems to speak of something specific, but general enough that we can put our own interpretations and memories on it. I'll admit I didn't fully understand it, but I really enjoyed it none the less.
