SMART CONFLCTIONSA Poem by SHEEMA HUQprose-poetrySMART CONFLCITIONS Amidst
the hugs and formalities no meet
up was ever to take place
these days, without: that pestering little communication accessory. Thoroughly customised she had
become (and formally guilty
of participating in) the constant
barrage of interruptions, from her
friends’ acquaintances, not
known to her, via non-verbal “excuse
me, just one minute”, sighs,
nods and hand gestures, or more
likely, “just following the
game” remarked her dearly regarded
former work
colleague, with his head fixed over the
screen and behaving as if,
many miles away................. then making a sudden
leap from the table, leaving
the premises to answer in
haste, while
they, themselves had not
seen each other for several months
and days. Shaping
an old dysfunctional liaison, distance
and unfamiliarity. Briefly resettling, following several more
text msg signals, he reaches into his
pocket to.... read again his inbox, making
unapologetic, though,
awkward, replies,
removed, entirely,
from her company, seemingly
devoted only.... to the device, like a message junkie. Long....
she did, for her friend to dedicate
some undivided attention, instead
of relegating her, by now reticent
fragility, to a miserably, covetable
position.... The end
was near, both
evasive parties
had become subsumed by non-urgent
emails and apps, fondling,
fidgety, & ever ready, ....their
friendship, bedevilled with an
overbearing unconventionality, and for
her in particular, a
frustratingly, inconvenient, joyless,
mystery.... By SH:
