AUTUMN LANDSCAPE

AUTUMN LANDSCAPE

A Poem by SHEEMA HUQ

Autumn reigns the landscape once again

with a graceful yet menacing prominence.

As carefree summer memories drift

hazily away into the distance.

The sunshine on certain days is rationed

with selective vigour. Grey clouds pose

stagnantly in the dull sky, while

the breeze feels motionless and meagre.

On a clear bright day, the bellowing wind

hosts and displays, turbulent scenes

of restless leaves on grieving branches,

that rustle, thrust and sway. Their

bustling sounds and movements

are haphazard and blasé.

The Autumn landscape is here once more.

Conkers, pumpkins and kernels from ferns

arrive in festive spirits for the new school term.

As days draw in sooner, temperature fall,

‘Trick or Treaters’ parade the streets in ghostly

attire for a Halloween ball.

Flats and houses turn on their lights

as a bonfire spits fumes and burns

hastily on its’ famously assigned night.

Matured, fallen heaps of leaves gather,

and richly disperse, penetrating the parks and

grounds, like a good witch’s subtle curse.

While many birds migrate off to warmer climes,

I notice sparrows and perhaps a green finch

gorging on leaves. A hedgehog then appears

from nowhere, tempted by fruit fallen from trees,

preparing to hibernate before the wintertime freeze.

I am an Autumn baby and love this time of year (almost) most of all. Even as I read this with spring at hand and snow still on the ground here in Colorado, I think you words make me wish for autumn once again. You bring each and every wonderful part of the time to such wonderful lite and creat a mind full of wonder with your words. Thank you for such a gift as this. Perfectly... perfectly... done!!!

This is a beautiful poem describing the various attributes of Autumn.
I believe that you truly have poetic eyes.
I admire your ability to be observant and and being able to capture your surroundings in precise, truthful and beautiful words.

thanks sincerely for such a flattering review....just my interpretation, though I did manage to get .. read more
three things...

first, October has always been my favorite month. so immediately this appeals to me.
second, "restless leaves on grieving branches" is a line i wish i had written...splendid.

third, bringing in the trick-or-treaters...some may imagine this line, out of place, in this poem given what else is here...but i don't find that true...we bring in the human element clashing a bit with the nature of fall..but it is the young, innocent, human element, and they do not disturb the landscape, they enhance it.

nice piece

and now, here we are in November..although a very poetic month for me usually...it is such an in between month..so barren, and raw and ugly.

thanks Jacob, I'll be scibbing a winter verse soon, i'm sure
Reading this, I felt I was watching some season related "lonely planet" sort of episodes on National Geographic! This, really, could become one of those voices behind the scenes on television, with autumn leaves swirling and birds taking off their flight.. Such serenity in this piece! Absolutely FAB!

no problem..i just expressed what I felt..:)
Lovely prose description of the transition into Autumn. Loved the lines 'turbulent scenes
of restless leaves on grieving branches,' and
'Matured, fallen heaps of leaves gather,
and richly disperse, penetrating the parks and
grounds, like a good witch’s subtle curse.' The witch metaphor is very clever

reviewing comes first for me I love reading other peoples writes :)
always inspired by the seasons. You have captured the deep essence of it here in a way that inspires. Instead of feeling as if I am "falling" into Autumn, I feel "lifted" to it; perhaps a spell from "a good witch's subtle curse"...

I wish you all the best of the season. Thankyou for sharing this.
