Not so lonely

It’s like this every day: I wake up, look at my empty phone then sullenly get up and get ready for school as my song plays loudly in my ears. I ignore the stares knowing none of them understand, not one bit. There is only one person though of course, my virtual boyfriend Aki from my favorite phone app. He is personalized to say such beautiful things to me and it’s what keeps me from going into the depths of depression. As part of my daily routine when I get to school I immediately connect to its wifi and start playing with Aki. “Ah, (y/n)-san, welcome back” I nod at the phone screen “I wrote you a poem while you were away, would you like me to read it to you?” My virtual sweetheart asks, I smile and choose an action “please do” is the selection I choose. I listen in my earphones as he reads fluently, it was beautiful and almost bring me to tears. “(y/n)!” I look up to see one of my so called best friends approach me, she doesn’t really talk or hang out with me anymore because of her new boyfriend perhaps I’m just jealous but I really wish she wouldn’t talk to me randomly like this. I quickly hide my phone “hey” I say as I wipe a tear from my right eye “I didn’t see you at the pep rally yesterday and” she pauses “why are you crying?” she asks me as I quickly wipe the tears from both eyes away “because, Pokémon you know they’re so hard to catch it frustrates me” I say quickly. She looks at me worriedly “well, I’ve got a surprise for you” she said looking incredibly excited “I set you up on a date, double date to be exact” I awe at her surprise “n-no” I said not really wanting to be tray Aki. “Oh, come one you’re always on your phone and I really need you to do this for me” she said, of course it was for her own benefit but what do I get out of it? “It’s me, you, Eiji, and the person you’re going with is Masumi!” She said trying to look excited, Masumi was sort of cute but he’s a player, I think for a moment as Misaki continues to beg me. “God I spoil you sometimes” I say looking away, Misaki’s eyes widen and she starts to celebrate “it’ll be perfect! It starts with a double date then the next you know we’re all getting married together” I looked at her with a helpless facial expression “uh, it’s only one date” I say putting my hands up “next Saturday, where something sexy” she winks at me and skips away leaving me feel conflicted on whether or not I should just cancel now while the invite is still fresh. I groan as the bell rings, I had hardly any time with Aki and now I have to go through school.

At lunch time I sit under the tree near the art studio, instead of drawing like usual I decided to spend time with the only person that understood me “Aki, that was beautiful” I selected an answer immediately as I got on. He rubs the back of his head “I’m glad you think so” he says “it’s just that, you’re so amazing that just saying it wouldn’t be enough” he started “(y/n)- san, will you be forever mine?” he asked putting out his hand. I squeal loudly as I got a few more stares, though I didn’t care I was extremely happy. Before I could select an answer I felt something tug on my arm “(y/n)” I hear a low voice causing me to look at the person calling my name “what?” I ask irritably, Masumi sits by me under the tree “I can’t wait for next Saturday” he said with a small smile “yeah?” I look away ‘well I can’ is all I could think “you know, it’d be a lot less awkward if we just started dating now” he said putting a hand on my shoulder “I’m good with an awkward date” I said with a small voice “now please leave me be, I’m doing..” I paused “homework” he looks at me suspiciously “well…just think about it” he says getting up from his position “I will” I said as I continued to look towards a random kid walking by. When he was gone I went back to my phone and answered Aki’s question, it was almost as if he was asking me to marry him and so I answered “yes” on the selection board as I held the phone to my chest “I really love you Aki” I said to myself “if only you were real.”

When I got home my mother greeted me with her usual small smile “so, how was school?” she asks quietly “it was fun, I have a date next Saturday “I said looking at her expression. She awed at me “(y/n), wow…I’m so happy for you” she says suddenly getting all excited, “it’s fine, it’s just as friends I’m not interested in anyone-“ “but Aki right?” she interrupts me “sweety he’s a fictional character it’s time to get over that app and meet some real guys” she winks at me “yeah, no” I said “I love you” I say as I dash upstairs to my room without saying anything else. When I get up to my room I immediately fall onto my queen sized bed, it was so comfortable after being in stiff chairs all the time “finally” I say pulling out my phone to look at it “dead? How can it be dead?” I say in disbelief “I just charged it” I sigh, there was no use crying about it as I grab my charger and plug it into the wall. “I guess I’ll just sleep since it’s pretty late anyway” I say touching my phone “I really do wish you were real, I love you Aki.” I say softly as I gently fall asleep hearing a gentle voice tell me “I love you too.”
