In from the side

In from the side

A Poem by Thomas Ryan

Beneath the posts and in the scrum,

A love blooms bright, a silent hum.

Two young men, their hearts collide,

Tech wizards by day, warriors outside.

James, with eyes a stormy blue,

His heart beats for his lover true.

In fields of green, they stand aligned,

A bond unbroken, hearts entwined.

Yet in the shadows, just out of sight,

An older gaze, eyes burning bright.

A friend, a teammate, a secret held,

In silence, his love unspoken dwelled.

Mark, the veteran, strong and wise,

Sees James with longing in his eyes.

His own heart quickens at the sight,

But he knows his love is not his right.

In boardrooms high and codes that fly,

They conquer worlds, they reach the sky.

But in the rush of lines and plays,

A silent yearning fills the days.

James and his love, their bond secure,

Their hearts are true, their motives pure.

Yet Mark, in shadows, hopes and dreams,

His silent love, a secret gleam.

In from the side, unnoticed, still,

He watches them, his heart, his will.

For love unspoken, love unseen,

In the shadows, he stays between.

A game of rugby, fierce and grand,

In every tackle, in every stand,

Mark fights with passion, heart on sleeve,

But for his love, he quietly grieves.

A try is scored, the crowd's delight,

Yet Mark's heart aches in the night.

For in the field and in the code,

His love for James remains untold.

So in from the side, he stands alone,

A silent guardian, love unknown.

And though his heart may never find

A love returned; he stays behind.

For sometimes love is sacrifice,

A hidden pain, a secret vice.

In from the side, Mark's love resides,

A silent tear in rugby tides
