The Homeless Hostel Says Goodbye.

The Homeless Hostel Says Goodbye.

A Poem by Thomas Ryan

The homeless hostel says goodbye,

To those who've stayed and those who've tried,

To find a place to call their own,

A place where they can feel at home.

The doors are closing, one by one,

The work is done, the day is done,

The beds are empty, the rooms are bare,

The silence echoes everywhere.

But in the hearts of those who've stayed,

The memories will never fade,

Of all the friends they've made along the way,

And all the things they've learned to say.

They've learned to hope, they've learned to dream,

They've learned to love, they've learned to scheme,

They've learned to laugh, they've learned to cry,

They've learned to live, they've learned to die.

So let us raise a glass or two,

To all the things that they've been through,

To all the people they've become,

And all the things that they've undone.

For in this moment, we can see,

The strength of human dignity,

The power of the human heart,

To rise above and make a start.

So let us say goodbye with grace,

And let us leave this sacred place,

With hope and love and peace of mind,

And all the things that we can find.
