The Christmas Tree that Ran Away

The Christmas Tree that Ran Away

A Poem by Thomas Ryan

In the jolly old Clonmel town not far away,

Lived a Christmas tree, quite a spry display.

Tired of tinsel and baubles so bright,

It sprouted some legs and took off in the night!

Through snow-covered fields, it merrily pranced,

With starry eyes and branches that danced.

Avoiding elves and Santa's sleigh,

It shouted, "I'm off to have my own holiday!"

"Oh, Christmas tree, where do you flee?"

Called out the townsfolk, as it dashed with glee.

"I'm tired of standing so still and tall,

I'll roam 'round Tipperary, have a ball!"

It tiptoed through towns and villages aglow,

Hitching rides on trucks with presents in tow.

From Tipp Town to Carrick on Suir, it travelled afar,

Spreading cheer, lighting up in every bizarre bazaar.

But as Christmas Eve drew close and near,

The tree felt a twinge of holiday cheer.

"I miss the warmth, the laughter, the fun,

I'm heading back home to Clonmel and feck this my roaming's done."

With twinkling lights, it came back to stay,

Apologizing to Santa in its own festive way.

Clonmel town cheered and danced, oh what a sight,

For the runaway Christmas tree had made things for once prefect and right!
