If I am not me, who would I be?

If I am not me, who would I be?

A Poem by Thomas Ryan

If I am not me, who would I be?

A question that lingers, deep within me.

For identity is a tapestry, woven and true,

A reflection of experiences, both old and new.

If I am not me, would I be a star,

Shining brightly, seen from afar?

Or perhaps a river, flowing with grace,

Navigating life's twists at its own pace.

If I am not me, would I be a tree,

Rooted in strength, standing tall and free?

Or maybe a bird, soaring high above,

Exploring the skies, embracing the love.

If I am not me, who would I become?

A different path, a new rhythm to strum?

Would I be a poet, painting words with ink,

Or a dancer, expressing what words can't think?

If I am not me, would I lose my way,

In a world where identities sway?

But deep within, a truth remains,

That I am unique, with my own refrains.

For if I am not me, I'd still be here,

A soul seeking purpose, without any fear.

Embracing the journey, wherever it leads,

Discovering the essence of who I can be.

So let me be me, in all that I am,

With flaws and strengths, like a shifting sand.

For in this vast universe, I have a role,

To be true to myself, and let my light unfold.

If I am not me, I'd still be unknown,

A puzzle piece missing, a story disowned.

But I am me, and that's where I'll stay,

Embracing my uniqueness, every single day
