In The Beginning

In The Beginning

A Chapter by EvilToast

My father told me stories of a world not like our own. Its inhabitants were normal, regular people with no outstanding abilities. They fought for global supremacy and sought out power. To be quite honest, it seems peaceful compared to the world I live in. The world I live in is filled with humans with outstanding powers but we did not have all the luxuries my father spoke of in the stories. There are ghosts, shadows, ports, flamers, shockers, buffers, keepers and a lot more. Only 30% of the world's population has such powers. It may seem fun to live in a world with such a great phenomenon, but power can corrupt people. About one hundred years ago, war broke loose. The entire world was divided. Factions and certain governments ruled regions of countries, and the entire world was thrown into a war zone. Although the fighting reached every corner of the globe, certain cities remained neutral. Luckily for me, my family lived in a neutral city called Reiyleh.
"Pops are we going to the market?" My family was full of sewers, people who had the power to heal others, so of course we were the doctors of the town. However I have not developed my sewers abilities yet. "Sean, hurry up and come down stairs!" My father obviously wanted me to go with him. As my father and I got ready to go to the market my mother ran outside with a beautiful smile on her face. She was a gorgeous woman, with flowing brown hair. "Son don't forget to buy the vegetables." Ugh, as much as I loved my mother i couldn't stand her steamed vegetables. A roaring laughter erupted from my father when he and I made eye contact. My mother pouted and hit the both of on our heads.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning, the sun was out, and the light brought a soothing warm blanket that enveloped me. The sky was a clear shade of blue and the clouds formed intricate shapes above. It was such a nice day to go out, I enjoyed days like these when I can simply go out.
As we were walking towards the market, Tiffany came out of her house to greet us. "Hey Mr. Lite, hey Sean." Tiffany was our neighbor and although both her parents were normal, she developed sewers powers like my family.
"Hey Tiffany, sorry to be in such a rush, but we need to get to the market, tell your father i said hi though". "Okay Mr. Lite, sorry to be a bother." I quickly jump in as to not offend her. "No no no, Tiffany we're just going into the market so we can get more supplies for the infirmary." That brought a grin across her face, but it seemed to come more from us conversing rather than our reason. "Alright Sean see you later, oh by the way what type of cake do you want Friday for your birthday?" It practically slipped my mind that this Friday I was turning seventeen. "You two can talk about it tomorrow night...during dinner." My dad said with an awkward smile.
The market place was busy today, at the entrance of the market were flamers performing and ports eager to provide service. Flamers were basically people with the ability to conjure and manipulate flames. Ports were those with the power to open port holes in all the major cities. When we entered the market place we were eagerly greeted by my father's friends. They were talking about the shipment of the beef and how great it was. I quickly got bored and began to concentrate on the shopping. As I strolled the marketplace the smell of the fish filled my nostrils. The city of Reiyleh had a wonderful port, and excellent fisherman. Suddenly from the corner of my eye I notice a movement towards me, but its too late. I'm knocked to the floor and my wallet falls into the hands of a damn ghost. Ghosts were ideal for thievery, they had the power to conceal their presence to the point of invisibility for a descent amount of time. The thief was not completely invisible, but he concealed himself well enough to fool me. The stupid smirk on his face annoyed me, but the teachings of my family kept me a pacifist. I was a soon to be sewer anyway, a healer, not a fighter. He ghost up and ran. I could faintly notice where he was going, but it was difficult to keep up with him in such a busy marketplace. He darted left and i continued to follow, i immediately knew he was heading for the exit. I ran full speed, not fully aware of where he was. My father and his friends were still there, but i could not spot the thief anywhere. Without hesitation, my father reached out and grabbed the thief by the arm while he was still invisible. I was shocked to see my father perform such a thing. He has a strong build, but he always appeared to be so kind and caring, never as though he had such skill.
My father talked to the thief, he did not turn the thief in. We finish our shopping and headed home. It was a pretty quiet walk to the house. My father did not bring up what happened at the market place, and my two sisters began to work on dinner. The sun was beginning to set when Katie, my older sister, called out that dinner was ready. Jessica, my younger sister, was putting plates on the table when I went into the dinning room. It was a quiet evening with the family, hardly anything was said. After dinner my sisters went with my father to practice their sewing powers on the patients in the infirmary. My mother looked at me, she seemed worried.
"Sean how are you?" My mother said with so much sympathy I wanted to cry.
"I'm fine mom, why do you ask?"
"Well it just seems like something is on your mind."
"No, it's nothing." I don't know why, but i began to get irritated.
"Does this have to do with your sewing abilities." It struck a cord, I couldn't stand being the only one in the family to not have sewing abilities.
"While all of you are saving people, I just stand at the side only occasionally helping, I can't stand being so useless, I too want to go with dad to the infirmary to help heal all the sick. Even Tiffany has abilities, it's just not fair!" My mother's eyes filled with tears, suddenly all the jealously and bitterness in my heart melted away. My mother took a step toward me and embraced me. I simply stood there for a few seconds allowing the heat from her body flow into mine. Her arms held me so close and tight I felt like nothing could go wrong and my life would be fine here in Reiyleh. I lift my arms up, and hold my mother too.
"Please understand Sean, whether or not you get the power to heal, we will always love you, remember that Sean." She wiped away the tears and headed to the living room to begin her research on diseases. A sewers abilities only go so far. Knowing my family will love me no matter what happens fill my chest with an incredible warmth.
Soon after I went to bed and drifted to sleep, ready for school tomorrow. As I laid there, looking out my window, an enormous figure flew through the sky at an amazing speed. I hardly got a glimpse of it, to tell whether or not it actually was there. I didn't get to sleep that night, the silhouette of the figure embedded into my mind. The longer i thought about it, the more I wondered if what I saw, had wings...
