a rose is a rose like any other rose, but there is nothing else like a rose

i smelled a rose today its scent of fragrance like a rose
for i do not, would not know how to describe its scent
to anyone who had not smelled its scent before
as in describing the color red to anyone who'd never had sight
born blind, born without olfactory function

i smelled a rose today its scent of fragrance like a rose
not a dandelion or daffodil or jasmine or tulip
but a rose
its scent it smelled metallic sweet, aroma like a velvet perfume
i placed my nose up against its petals smooth, like silken flesh of you
i sniffed and focused with closed eyes and tried to pinpoint its essence
and on the second sniff lost all my sense of definition
i lay it aside and tried again and upon the first sniff again
i caught the scent of sweet metallic perfume
like no other scent with which to compare
 
a rose smells like a rose
and no other thing upon this earth smells like this
i smelled a rose today its scent of fragrance like a rose
i closed my eyes and thought of you
there is no other flower upon the earth,
like a rose or you
