some things never changeA Story by RuseInexthe future holds wonderful technological possibilities, humanity will be affected in some ways but remain intrinsically human "Yeah, I get it, I'll be there by 6 p.m. he said eyes steady
on the road, he interfaced with a click of his brain's synaptic spark of
electrons to his internally embedded device. It lay latent, at the ready,
fueled by his own biochemistry, his body's cellular Krebs's cyclic reaction's
energy buttressed by mitochondrial microbiological biophysics. He was
communicating with his office secretary back home.
The device lay embedded under the epidermis of his skin; the
deepest layer at the base of his skull, near the cerebellum. It controlled all
peripheral devices, just like the cell phone used to years ago. All members of
the population had similar implants.
Cell phones were obsolete as were laptops. It was a simple matter
of thinking, yes, thinking was equivalent to tapping keys on keyboard. Thinking
had become organic, synthesized to electrons.
Thinking about a subject or topic was sufficient to induce instant
activation of the BioDevice. Instantly, images appeared in the central frontal
lobe region of his cerebral cortex displaying varied images in full colored
frames. The BioDevice itself was but one component of the collective conscience
and information of all humanity sustained by supercomputers mainframes located
throughout the world. Through this device he and all of civilized humanity had
instant access to all of the data on any subject since the keeping of pictorial
and written records by mankind. The device included electronic transactions of
monetary business provided the client had his or her assigned numerical
code.
Earlier they had gotten sidetracked and lost in Los Angeles' maze
of freeways. They preferred to drive than rent a Google Self Navigating Car. He
refused to stop and ask for directions and an argument ensued.
"I should have had my BioDevice turned on." He lamented to his
wife. "We wouldn't have had these troubles."
"Well, if you had stopped and asked someone for directions!"
He refused to cooperate with her requests and turned his BioDevice to On.
All he had to do was think about his traffic's destination and interface
thought with countless mainframe cloud computers and he would either hear the
BioDevice response via his car's speakers or within his own consciousness. If
he chose the latter, it was a private affair; no one else could hear. This came
in handy if someone were to say, be sitting in passenger seats.
Listening to his BioDevice incognito had a draw back. At times it
was difficult to maintain a two way conversation while interfacing with
passenger, be it wife, friend or guest. His thoughts sometimes got entangled in
this type of cross way conversation.
And so it was that on this special trip that he chose to entertain
himself while feigning his full attention to his wife. The issue of
navigation's destination had been rectified by his BioDevice. He was watching a
YouTube video on his Cognitive Screen while feigning full conversational
devotion to his lovely wife. She was engaged in dialogue with him on this;
their anniversary road trip. Her own BioDevice had been turned off,
(she later confessed).
What started as sundry conversation regarding their
destination turned personal and intimate. She asked him his views on their
four decades-old marriage. She was probing his libido with romantic words in
preparation for their upcoming 5 star hotel's sexual escapade.
He responded defensively. Part of it had to do with being
subconsciously annoyed at her leading while he was trying to get into a song
by David Bowie. "Would you
shut off your stupid BioDevice, it's supposed to be our anniversary trip!" "Oh,
sorry." Feeling guilt,
he immediately Telepathised the BioDevice to Off. Minutes dragged
by with no speech from either party. Finally on the brink of psychological
angst's bitter eruption of cursing which she refrained from exclaiming, she
bellowed in tears, "Don't you have anything to say?!" "Ahh, I'm
sorry Honey, . . . ah, no, . . . just a second." As inconspicuously
as he could muster a telepathic thought to his BioDevice, he inputed:
"topics of discussion on marriage anniversary trip.
