The Land of the CoastA Poem by MehA poem I wrote in 7th grade for some contest I didn't place in... but hopefully, it earns a spot in the Cafe. One gray early morning, I stood on Seacliff Mount. My hands spread out, I walked to the edge,
I looked down, down to the vast sea.
I took a deep breath and dived down off the ledge.
Water was all around me, both black and green.
I saw a tiny jellyfish float gently beside me.
I saw a shark, a whale, and so much more.
And I thought to myself: If only people could see what I see.
My air was almost gone and I pulled myself up.
I took another breath, wanting to go back in glee,
But I stayed up for one minute more.
I thought once again: If only people could see what I see.
I pushed myself down, down to the depths of the ocean,
But this time to a deeper place under the sea.
And I saw creatures I could not name
I looked at them curiously while they stared back looking gloriously.
I swam back up the world beyond the sea,
Up and above to the land I had always known.
Faster and faster, up and up,
To the land of California, the land of the coast.
