Refugee

Refugee

A Poem by Rudi J.P. Lejaeghere
"

You know those of us who leave our homes in the morning and expect to find them there when we go back - it's hard for us to understand what the experience of a refugee might be like. Naomi Shihab Nye

"

We’re all refugees,

on our way to come home

at a certain moment,

some day

in this or another life,

our soul rooted out,

wrestled from and in a fight

to keep alive,

to leave the home of your heart

and to be lonely without a land,

to know that maybe

you’ll never go back again,

dependent on charity

of the decadence of the abundance

and seeing that some

don’t want to break the bread

putting their wines in the deepest cellar

death has been scraped from the waves

as a toxic foam on the lips of the child

that never will return

on this world,

the barricades of the barbed wire

will never stop the hunger,

the blood of this crown of thorns

will again have to be carried

before they will believe again.

What a beautiful twofold journey you've penned here, Rudi...an apt piece that speaks to the trials and tribulations of those caught in today's refugee crisis and that of the individual refugee that lives inside each and every one of us... great work, my friend

I really like your rather archaic usage of words, Rudi..it is a dying art in today's world..reminiscent of J.R. Tolkien..good job, Rudi :)

I agree my friend. Especially in the USA. 99% of people came from another place. USA did treat the immigrants badly. A powerful and needed poem to be read. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

a beautiful write and yes we can all feel the plight of refugees in whatever way shape or form they come ... our job ... simple and yet it seems so hard ... to drop the fear and open our hearts ...

This is burning issue right now, I can't imagine how it feels to leave the roots, the grasslands where you belong. Excellent thoughtful poem

really influential write, Rudi...

the truth of it is both literal in what is going on with the refugees these days and is so sad, but there are also those refugees of the heart, escaping from one relationship and trying to find solace and freedom in another.
